India - Window Decoration in Jew Town, Cochin, South-India

[11/08/2003] In India the swastika is widely seen as a symbol of luck. Just like it is used here as a window decoration for the company-building of the COMA (Cochin Oil Merchants Association). No Jew who lives in Cochin complains about the use of the swastika symbol in India.

Even though now below 20 Jews remain in Cochin (once several thousands lived there), all living on Synagogue Lane, the neighbourhood is still called Jew Town. In its heyday, Synagogue Lane was the address of Jewish families who dealt in the spice trade. Now, all the storefronts are souvenir shops owned by Muslims who fled the violence in their native Kashmir.
