Philippines - Parade at the Ati Atihan Festival[09/20/2003] Fiestas are very important on the Philippines, for example the yearly Ati Atihan festival in Kalibo or the Sinulog festival in Cebu. In the third week of January the most famous festival of the Philippines take place, the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo on the Island of Panay. The origin of this festival goes way back: In the 13th century 10 Datus with there families had to flee from Borneo.
They sailed to the north-east and ended up at the Philippine Island Panay, were the at that moment resident Ati (small, black negros) hand over a piece of Land for them. A festival was then held, and the new-comers painted there faces black, to look like the resident Ati. ![]() |
